Il Canto della Preistoria starts with a spoken introduction gives us a little PFM lite. You can tell that a larger amount of money was devoted to this project as it is audibly superior in recording techniques than most albums of the era. This one sounds like a bunch of neo prog bands from decades in the future. before hitting a decent guitar solo that almost cuts loose. Il Calore Umano sports some wordless vocal choir work straight from an Italian 70's Morricone film. La Mia Rivoluzione starts with acoustic guitar and vocals before heading into a slick Santana guitar break. Given the combined industry experience of those involved (including lyricist to the stars, industry heavyweight Mogol), one could see they had a larger world view than most of their contemporaries. Opener Come Una Zanzara is reminiscent of latin era Return to Forever with vocals-this album is much closer to 1974 anglicized prog and jazz fusion sounds than most of their brethren (though by 1974, other Italian prog bands were starting to turn towards slicker sounding Jazz fusion). It's one of the easiest Italian progressive items.Īn interesting jazz rock group made up of pieces of other well known Italian bands, Il Volo don't quite live up to their pedigreed expectations, but deliver a very well recorded, if flawed, album. Their second "Essere O Non Essere" is a classic item of mostly instrumental music with some theme more soft and some majesties keyboards flights a la KING CRIMSON. Close to PFM or BANCO by the vocals parts and the beauty of the themes and to E.L.P. The first Italian album from 1974, their music is built upon two keyboards with great vocals and lush arrangements. Very good (somewhat jazz) fusion melodic symphonic with also very interesting percussion, keyboards, as nicely balanced music. The group disbanded soon after the second release. An obvious similarity with FORMULA TRE is evident, along with a certain jazz-rock feel present throughout both albums, whose only distinctive element is the voice, missing on "Essere O Non Essere?" With such a pedigree it's obvious that both albums are very well played, and enjoyable but not memorable, lacking originality. Usually described as a "supergroup", IL VOLO was a studio band formed by very popular musicians all coming from famous bands: Alberto Radius and Gabriele Lorenzi from FORMULA TRE, Mario Lavezzi from FLORA FAUNA CEMENTO and Camaleonti, Bob Callero from OSAGE TRIBE and DUELLO MADRE, Gianni Dall'Aglio from RIBELLI, along with composer Vince Tempera who also had his own band PLEASURE MACHINE. Founded in Italy in 1974 - Disbanded in 1975
